A privileged home in an ancient setting

The ancient village of Relleu, 15 kilometres from the sea at Villajoyosa on the Costa Blanca, is home to the Almàssera Vella, a substantial family house constructed in 2000 on the site of the village’s original olive press, and used since then as a base for residential cultural courses.

With the services of architect Ruben Alcija, the derelict building, which had lain empty for a decade, was brought back to life as a privileged home, occupying the same footprint as the original building but orientated to enjoy dramatic mountain views including the village’s 10th century castle, an “ermita”, and terraced sierras moulded by the Moors.

The main Almàssera house offers three floors: five bedrooms and four shower/ bathrooms to the top floor; an extensive open reception area, library, office and generous loggia to the entrance floor; and a dining room, sitting room, large country kitchen with island unit, storerooms, utility area and cloaks to the ground floor.

At the rear, the extensive terrace includes a swimming pool, a lemon orchard and stairs down to a large terraced garden with fig-trees, pomegranate trees and cypresses, with an almond grove and other fruit trees at the bottom.

In 2004, we acquired a three-storey village house, which has been converted into an annexe cottage, with three bedrooms (each with private shower room), kitchen and two reception rooms, plus a self-contained three-room flat. This has allowed us to accommodate courses for up to twelve students plus tutor, as well as proving popular as retreat accommodation.

Development potential within the Estate

On the far side of the ravine below the Almàssera, there is a curious “cottage ornée”; while this is in need of complete renovation, it enjoys a stunning plot. The Property also includes a derelict Moorish farm-house, which is also ripe for redevelopment. The grounds include 1.7 hectares (4.2 acres) of orange, lemon and olive groves on traditional cultivation terraces (bancales) on the slopes of the Relleu Castle Acropolis.

The whole Property is now on the market for sale as a private Home with income opportunity, or as a base for residential cultural courses such as cookery, yoga, personal development, creative writing, painting, mountain walking etc.
